You wake up in the morning
Prepared to make your eyes feast on dance
You are not worried, all you have to do is watch and enjoy
And get lost in the midst of all the beauty of body shapes
Deep, sweet, sour sounds
Dance finds a way of speaking to us
No need for translators
Somehow we glue our eyes to the Dance space
And we let our minds wander into their stories
Imagination carries us into sacred dance circles
And our spirits are intertwined into one
Dance knows Swahili, French, and English
Continue reading "Nkoyi and Dance speaks Swahili, French and English"

The invitation to visit the festival at Kinshasa was met with mixed feelings. Curiosity was the motivating factor that first made me accept to be part of the programme. I was curious to learn more about the country and her people since I knew very little about DR.Congo apart from the wars.
At the same time I saw the opportunity as an adventure trip into the unknown that was very much worth taking. Although I must admit that I had some reservations, it was all overshadowed by the curiosity to learn more about the festival and the good people of Kinshasa.

The festival was a brilliant idea and I give thumbs up to K.V.S for the effort they have made to promote the arts in the Kinshasa area and the greater good of the people of Congo. The festival was put together to showcase the artistic works of the youth in the Kinshasa area and what they have done throughout the year.

Groups were carefully selected from the Kinshasa area and Kisangani. For me, my interest was to see what artists in these areas are doing with respect to dance and with the little they had at their disposal i.e. in terms of infrastructure and motivation.

Space was provided for the various groups to rehearse on a daily basis during the festival period. So I had the chance to witness the groups rehearse before the main performance in the evening.

The festival also paraded some foreign groups. One of such groups was a Slovak Dance Collective which is based in Belgium and has a very good relationship with K.V.S, the organizers of the festival.
